Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney are each nominated for multiple 2013 Grammy Awards, and could put further strain on their already crowded trophy cases when the show airs tonight (Feb. 10) live on CBS at 8 pm ET/PT.

In addition, Elton John is expected to perform live twice during the ceremony — leading a tribute to deceased Band legend Levon Helm, and dueting with budding British songwriting star Ed Sheeran. Sting, always up for participating in odd musical pairings, will join pop stars Rihanna and Bruno Mars to perform an unknown song or songs.

The nominations were announced Dec. 5 during the hour-long industry self-gratification festival known as the Grammy Award Nominations concert. As you’ll recall, about all the classic rock we got that night was the sight of open-shirted Who frontman Roger Daltrey doing his best late-career Ric Flair impression. Even that barely registered, as the group’s previously taped performance of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ was unceremoniously cut short after about two minutes.

Springsteen’s single ‘We Take Care of Our Own‘ was nominated for both Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. In the former category he’s going up against the Alabama Shakes, the Black Keys, Coldplay and Mumford and Sons. In the latter, he’s battling Jack White, Mumford & Sons, the Black Keys and Muse.

His album ‘Wrecking Ball‘ is also up for Best Rock Album alongside many of the same names: The Black Keys, Coldplay, Muse and Jack White. If you want to get creative, Springsteen’s actually involved with five categories, as country star Eric Church‘s love letter to “the Boss,” the hit single ‘Springsteen,’ is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song.

McCartney’s 2012 pop standards album ‘Kisses on the Bottom‘ has been nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, and the deluxe re-issue of his 1971 album ‘Ram‘ is up for both Best Historical Album and Best Box Set or Limited Edition Package. The Beach Boys are also up for the packaging award, for the deluxe edition of ‘The Smile Sessions.’

If it’s OK with you, we’re not going to run down the list of all the undoubtedly fine competitors they’re up against in these never-going-to-be-televised categories. They tend to have rather unwieldy titles such as ‘Old-Time Smoky Mountain Music: 34 Historic Songs, Ballads, And Instrumentals Recorded In The Great Smoky Mountains By “Song Catcher” Joseph S. Hall.’ Besides, if you really want to know you can get the complete list of all nominees at the official Grammy Awards site. Stay tuned to Ultimate Classic Rock throughout the night for all the 2013 Grammy Awards classic rock news.
