Finley School District Supporters Ticked Off About KOOL FM Facebook Meme

On April 25 this meme, or joke, was shared on 97.5 KOOL FM’s Facebook page. It was instantly popular and has been shared by other Facebook users 36 times. A few people interpreted the joke as an insult against Finley schools and within the last 24 hours have complained on Facebook. One individual even called the studio line to complain directly to the on-air personality. Check out what they’re saying:

  • Not funny at all, that’s rude an incentive, have you guys ever been out to Finley??? Maybe you should stop by the high-school some time and talk to our amazing seniors. I happen to be one of those seniors and regardless of what you think I do have a future.
  • As the high school counselor for the past 16 years at River View High School, I can tell you for a fact our students have accomplished amazing things. We have the highest graduation rates of all the area high schools and win awards for it each year. We send over 90% of our graduating seniors onto higher education, vocational schools, or the military. Please consider removing this from your website.
  • Love the music, but am extremely disappointed you would post a picture like this. I’m assigned to the Finley School District as a School Resource Officer and I’ve found there is more heart, determination and class in these young adults than in many other larger schools combined. And I know the same holds true for the schools that we call our rivals. Smaller communities should not be the butt of jokes by responsible organizations or individuals.
  • Have to say that this is an untrue, mean, crappy, stupid picture! I would love to meet you in person because I am sure I would change your ignorant thought process! How many students in the Tri-City area have received a full ride scholarship to a pack 12 school to play football and graduate with a bachelor degree? Yes that is right, from Finley! Signed, Mamasledge!

It is possible the people are feeling defensive because of a recent TV news report that incorrectly stated a Finley elementary school’s kitchen had been shut down by the health department. On May, 7 KOOL FM published a news story clarifying the incident never occurred.
To set the record straight, the above meme was created because Tri-Cities residents frequently tease one another about Finley. My own wife spent her teenage years in Finley. Her brother raises pigs in Finley. At least one employee at this office lives in Finley along with his highly-successful children. One was accepted into NASA’s moon buggy design challenge last month, which was also reported on KOOL FM.
The joke was not directed at Finley school children or their educators.

If anyone is familiar with the popular website UrbanDictionary.com, check out what users of the site had to say about Finley:

A suburb of Kennewick, Washington. A town where everyone knows everyone. Home to the Riverview Panthers. A town in which bottled water is a must if you would like to survive.

Person 1: What’s wrong with him?

Person 2: Oh, he grew up in Finley.

Person 3: That explains a lot!
