Real Story Behind “American Woman” by “The Guess Who”
If you were listening to The Bob & Tom Show this morning and heard the interview with Jeff Dunham, you heard the conversation about Canadian rock group “The Guess Who” and their hit song, “American Woman.”
A story was told that the song was never really “written.” A member of the band broke a guitar string and while everyone was waiting for him to replace it, someone else started playing the famous riff that begins the song. The remaining members of the band just started jamming to the riff and having a good time while entertaining the crowd until they could return to their set. Later, they turned it into the hit song, “American Woman.”
Well, a story that good is rarely true… but it appears this one is! I did a little research and found multiple sources backing up the tale.
The song is often discussed because of its negative critique of American pop culture. Here’s a funny video making fun of the way most Americans learn the Canadian band was not singing an ode to American women:
