Three Well-Known Tri-Cities Residents Perished This Past Weekend, What Are Your Reflections?
We lost three well known Tri-Citians in a 2-day period at the beginning of this week. Pasco High football coach from 1961 – 1977 Bill TilI and former Tri-City Herald sports writer Hec Hancock passed away Sunday. Local attorney & Tri-City Prep Academy athletic director Ray Whitlow perished in a car accident Monday morning.
I didn’t know Ray Whitlow but I was impressed by all the people in my orbit that did. Bill Till coached Pasco when my school, Kamiakin, was new and we played against his grid-iron powerhouse. I did have the good fortune of working with Hec Hancock at the Tri-City Herald and we belonged to the same athletic club where I used to see him often.
Nobody could work a Nordic-Trac ski machine like Hec! His demeanor was a joy to be around, he even tolerated my often asking, “What the Hec is going on?” A more likeable individual you would be hard pressed to find. I was already missing him when I heard the news.
A friend and sports editor at the Tri-City Herald, Jeff Morrow, reminisces about all three and the paper’s website has more stories on Ray Whitlow. May they all rest in peace as they will be missed by many.
